Vegetable Steam Times

“Why do the Irish boil vegetables down to a soup?” Denis Leary

Steaming vegetables locks in flavor and leaves them crisp and delectable. Steaming is easy, and everybody enjoys the results.

There are two easy methods of steaming:

Stovetop:

Bring water in a large pot to a boil. Fit a steaming basket or colander into the first pot.  Keep the basket/colander out of the boiling water. Once you’ve established a good boil, add the vegetables and cover the pot with a lid, leaving space for the steam to escape.

Microwave:

Put your vegetables in a microwave-safe bowl. Rinse the vegetables. Do not shake off the water or dry the vegetables; this is all the water necessary. Cover the bowl with a microwave-safe plastic wrap or lid. Leave a space open for venting, like the corner of a square bowl.
